Artist Howie Tsui (Tsui Ho Yan) discusses his monumental work Retainers of Anarchy, a 27-metre-long animated video scroll featuring scenes from historic stories and modern life within parallel universes.

The influence of martial arts fictional stories (known as wuxia in Mandarin; mou hap in Cantonese) about heroes, wanderers and drifters can be seen in many aspects of Retainers of Anarchy. In this interview Tsui speaks to the martial arts narratives in his work, alongside the inspiration he has taken from Hong Kong’s Kowloon Walled City and major works of historical Chinese art.
