Jesslyn Wijaya After Mt Fuji

Visiting Japan inspired me to use my body of work to consider the hybridisation of the cultures of East and West by using the landscape conventions of both cultures. The landscapes of Japan were lush and vibrant, vastly different from the dry and dusty landscapes of Australia. Using dry point etching in reference to both the traditional craft of Japanese woodblock printing and European conventions of engraving, I represent a hybrid landscape that shifts from traditional Asian landscapes to scenes of Australia. In doing so, I explore the similarities and unique qualities of the different landscapes through recognisable cultural symbols.
