Abbey Haberecht Self-portrait (but I don't fit the stereotype)
The idea for my work came from comments that I have received about my Aboriginality. In particular, ‘But you don’t look Aboriginal’. In questioning the physical identity of an Aboriginal person I have photographed my sister painted ‘black’ and ‘white’ as I put the question to the audience, ‘Do I look Aboriginal now?’ The ghost-like figures emerging from each side of the middle panel represent my conscience in a re-interpretation of Vincent Fantauzzo’s artwork Heath. In the side panels are scans of a selection of my journal pages which make ironic, political and personal references to both ‘white’ and ‘black’ cultures.
