Lauren Brender The female paradox

Work by Lauren Brender

My body of work represents my interest in the role of feminist thought in contemporary society, whereby the historical feminist fight for opportunity has equated to a backlash. Influenced by the works of the postmodern artist Sigmar Polke, my artwork is involved in the paradoxical concept that women can ‘have it all’; as the advertising campaigns say, they are ‘worth it’, yet the expectation and typecast of domestic housewife still stands as a strong juxtaposition. Herein lays the ever-present tension between the role of women; the silence and voice of the female gender. Is it still inevitable that women speak softly and carry a mop and bucket?
